Computer offender; appeal promised
PA Wellington. The Commissioner of I Police (Mr R. J. Walton) has been asked not to dismiss a; policeman who has been: fined $750 for making an I unauthorised disclosure of information from the Wa-: nganui computer. “The New Zealand Police i Association will support an; appeal bv Constable Robert ' Markham (the officer fined)," said the national ( secretary of the association (Dr R. A. Moodie). “A fine of $750 for an J error of judgment and the consequential dismissal from his office that such a pen-1 alty obviously invites will be appealed against in the Supreme Court, “The association fully supports the need for sanctions, against misuse of informa- i tion gained from the com-' puter, and we fully support l the view that the computer must not be allowed to become an instrument for the invasion of privacy,” he said. “However, in this particular case, the association will not only support the appeal, but has also asked the Commissioner of Police not to terminate the officer’s employment.”
