Racing and trotting Auckland Mun Lee picked to win Galaxy

Special correspondent Auckland Weights and recent form considered. rhe Galaxy Stakes at Ellerslie today looks made for the Hastings mare. Mun Lee. All she needs do. it seems, is manage the ground which suffered further through rain vesterday A new race at Ellerslie, and one 01 a New Zealand series sponsored by Dominion Breweries, the Galaxy Stakes is a 2'JUUm event for mares and entires run at xveight-foi-age. The weights. consequently, have no more than a 2kg range, from 58kg to s«kg. Mun Lee is one of the Held on 56kg. due to receive weight from horses to v. hich. in a straight-out handicap, she would be required to give as much and more. The horses with 58kg and 57kg are Legal Command. No Surrender. Optica, Eunienides. Luck Roona, Voliz and Wairere Girl. Braless. Bruton Road. Rose of Carlyle and Shifilou. besides Mun Lee. have 56kg. In a handicap there might not be much between Mun Lee and Braless. but Bruton Road. Rose of Carlyle and Shifilou would he guaranteed much less weight. Mun Lee showed her class in the second half of last season when she won the North Island Challenge Stakes. Great Northern Oaks and Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes in successive starts. She looked as good as ever when winning Rotorua’s Challenge Stakes three starts back and. not much more titan a week ago beat ai] except Silver Bov in the 1600 m Japan-Bay of Plenty Jnternat'onal at Tauranga. Mun Lee has seldom raced on anything but fairly firm footing. On two of the few occasions she finished second in a class five sprint and fourth in the Lowland Stakes, both during the 1977 spring. Legal Command and Braless, judged by their efforts in the Easter Handicap on Saturday, are prospects to be in the money and Rose of Carlyle, following a hat-trick of wins in intermediate company, and Shifilou merit some consideration. An Awapuni five-year-old. Legal Command has a 2000 m win at Tauheienikau to his credit and the way he ran out the 1600 m of the Easter suggested ho is ready for this one. The Galaxy’ Stakes will be the first leg of the double. The field for the second leg, the Bowen Handicap. 1200 m. is big and verv open. Lady Belle and Al Dome, if able to manage the footing, should be very prominent. So should Sorranita. Another worth consideration is Freelance, out of form but a 1200 m winner in very heavy ground at Ellerslie last spring.
