Swimming body upset

The chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (Mr M. R. Duckmanton) is disappointed by a lack of response by other sports bodies to a suggestion that there be a later closing date for nominations for the Moscow Olympic team next year. In November last year the

association decided to write to other national associations involved in the Olympics to ask for their support to have the closing date extended from mid-April to mid-May next year. Mr Duckmanton said that several sports had indicated they were in favour of the later date and would support

swimming’s move, which was raised at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association last week. But when Mr Duckmanton raised the subject at the meeting it was met with disinterest.

“I was very disappointed to see the apathy of sports bodies to the suggestion,” he said. “The sports who said they supported it said nothing. Nobody spoke for or against it. It was as though no-one cared less.” Mr Duckmanton said that unless a move was made soon to have the dates changed it would be too late. The matter had been passed to the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association’s executive for a recommendation.
