Soccer Caversham in lead after Dunedin win
Caversham took an early lead in the Midland Coach* lines Soccer League competition with a 2-1 win over 'Shamrock in Dunedin on Saturday. It is the only team to have won both its matches and has a one-point lead over Papanui Working Mens Club. The Caversham goalscorers were John Moodie and Marc Chidley, with Derek Neill scoring for Shamrock. The Shamrock striker, Joe Mullins, was sent off for arguing during the match.
Papanui deservedly beat Cashmere-Wanderers, 2-1, at Queen Elizabeth II Park No. 2, with goals from Mark Lynn and Alan McCall, while John Findlay scored for Cashmere. A penalty by Findlay which would have earned Cashmere a point was well saved by the Papanui goal-keeper,. Tom
Daly, in the final minute. Two goals from Stan McGaffin gave Woolston Working Mens Club its first win of the competition over Green Island at Garrick Park. Woolston created several scoring chances but sound goal-keeping from Geoff Barnes in the Green Island goal kept Woolston’s score down.
An early goal by lan Cowan gave Technical a 1-0 win over North End United at Queen Elizabeth II Park No. 2 in the first game. Along with Cashmere-Wan-derers, North End, has yet to get a point and seems to be in for a struggle. Rangers’ match with Western will be played this afternoon at Rangers Park. Result of matches played in the qualifying league: Northern Hearts 5, University 3; Halsweil 4, Burndale United 1; New Brighton 2,
Christchurch United 1; Nomads 3, Rangiora 1.
