Access to hospital
Sir, — Your editorial (April 12) must be applauded for comments regarding patient safety but I would suggest your editorial writer studies the facts more closely. The access for seriously ill patients from the north side of the citv makes an editorial point but these patients will finally be unloaded in the ambulance bay adjacent to the accident and emergency denartment in Riccerton Avenue. The A and E department and loading bay have been recently rebuilt. The route taken would therefore be across the proposed bridge, along a connecting ring road to Riccarton Avenue (across reserve land), past congested hospital park-
ing and the Nurses’ Home, to enter Riccarton Avenue at a very dangerous exit and then re-enter the hospital by the A and E department. Do you wonder that questions are being asked about the bridge and the whole aspect of hospital planning and access? The legal and environmental issues are other aspects of the whole problem. — Yours, etc., R. H. COATES. April 14, 1979.
