Air N.Z. fares

Sir, — What has Air New Zealand to worry about if the bulk of passengers, through circumstances, cannot use the low air fares? If this minority produces the bulk of the SO.4M profit then New Zealand cannot afford an international airline. Domestic and trans-Tasman fares are such that Air New Zealand milks the consumer dry. What has happened to innovation and competition? Mount Cook Airlines can reduce domestic fares as can the Australian domestic airlines. Mount Cook is trying to improve the lot of its travellers with reduced fares and some in-flight meals. Singapore Airlines are renowned for their progressive thinking and Air New Zealand for the lack of any. Air New Zealand will no doubt soon announce that meals are extra on its services. — Yours, etc., DAVID SMITHAM. April 14, 1979.
