Pakistan Cabinet splits
NZPA-Reuter Islamabad The Pakistan National Alliance, an important Right-wing grouping sharing power with the military ruler, General Zia-Ul-Haq, has decided at a meeting to leave his Cabinet, authoritative sources have said in Islamabad. The P.N.A. has 12 members in the 22-member Cabinet formed by General Zia last August. It groups most of the Right-wing parties that campaigned against the Government of the late former Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and helped the general stage a coup in July, 1977. Politicians believe the alliance wishes to distance itself from the Army administration after the hanging of Mr Bhutto 11 days ago for ordering the killing of a political opponent, fearing that if it remains in the Cabinet it could become a target of popular resentment. General Zia has promised to hold elections in November. The P.N.A.'s president (Maulana Mufti Mahmud) said the alliance had achieved its objectives of introducing Islamic reforms and obtaining a date for elections. Informed sources said General Zia was holding a meeting of senior military aides when the P.N.A. took its decision in the capital.
