The surprising absences of Tom Egnot and Alan Mitchell marked the first day of the Canterbury surfing championships at Gore Bay yesterday. However, the heat winners included the favoured Paul Bennett and Dave Conder. Results of open grade heats were:—Heat one.—R. Skidmore 1, G.
