Water polo anti-climax

By

RAY CAIRNS

From ambitious beginnings, the new structure of the national men’s inter-club water polo championship has crumbled a little. Indeed, the third and final round which will be played todav and tomorrow at the Freyberg Pool, Wellington, has struggled to eyen get off the ground. The draw has been -written and re-written several times as first Beckenham-Sockburn—; the runner-up last year—had indicated it could not attend a tournament extending over three days; then Canterbury University becoming a late entrant. Finally, Wharenui withdrew, without stating a reason, but perhaps in frustration at the draw being continually revamped. With all these goings-on, the third and final round is not the finale that the present first equal platings of Beckenham-Sockburn and Maranui should demand. Indeed, it has become an anticlimax of considerable proportions and one that should ensure that not again will there be an effort to play senior representatives over such a long period.
