Murray Greys maintain strength at Culverden
The Murray Grey breed again showed its popularity at the Culverden calf sale on Thursday by selling at prices well above other breeds in spite of a generally lethargic market and a relatively small total yarding.
The top price went to a pen of 15 Murray Greycross steers sold by I. H. Atkinson, of Woodbank, for $222, with another pen of 14 selling at $204. Five Murray Grey-Angus-cross steers were sold by D. H. Atkinson and Son, of Hanmer Springs, at $2OO. Murray Grey heifers sold equally well, I. H. Atkinson selling one pen of 12 at $217, another of 13 at $2OO, and a third of seven at $l7l. All his Murray Greys were 16 months old.
Eighteen-month-old Murray Grey heifers sold by D. H. Atkinson and Son fetched from $173 to $193. The total yarding of calves for the sale was only 745. The 48 head of Murray Grey-cross steers attained a pen average of $lB5 with
the pens of 53 heifers ave. raging $lB2. In contrast, Hereford steers sold from $137 to $193, for a pen average of $156. The top price went to a pen of four sold by J. R. Wilson and Son, of Hanmer Springs. Angus and Angus-cross steers sold from $ll9 for the lighter calves to $204 for the heavier, the pen average being $145. Overall, steer prices on a per pen basis averaged $157 compared with $l7O at the Addington market earlier in the week. Heifers of all breeds attained a pen average of $l4O compared with $149.50 at the previous Addington sale. The lowest sale was of four light Angus at $79. Calf sales at Culverden included: D. H. Grigg (Rotherham). 20 Angus heifers at Sl3B, another 20 at Sl2O, and 13 lighter heifers at $99; C. H. Gray (Walau), eight Murray Grey cross steers at Sl7O, another six at $129, and and seven Murray Grey cross heifers at $171; D. H.
