‘Revolt from within’
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi India’s former test captain, Bishen Singh Bedi has denounced the World Series Cricket organisation (W.S.C.) for its lack of credibility and said he had turned down an offer to play in the series.
The left-arm spinner, Bedi, said the offer was made to him and India’s top batsman, Sunil Gavaskar, by the managing director of the W.S.C., Mr Lyn ton Taylor, in Lahore last year during India’s
tour of Pakistan. “My immediate reaction then was that of a revolt from within,” Bedi said in a letter to Mr Taylor. The letter, which was also released to the press, was a blunt reply to Mr Taylor’s remark at a press conference in Bombay that Bedi had not been approached to sign for the Kerry Packer World Cricket Series. Bedi, who has been picked in the Indian team to tour England this summer, said: “If you say that I was never approached to join W.S.C., you confirm my belief that your whole set-up is lacking in credibility.”
He said: “Perhaps your money-power is not used to taking a ‘no’ which is a pity, really. “However humble my cricketing credentials they are not for sale,” Bedi said.
