LAY SERMON AT EASTER

By

WHIM WHAM

Yesterday having been Good Friday, A holiday, if hardly a High Day — And today being Easter Eve — And tomorrow, so Christians believe, The day Jesus rose from the Grave —■ We Worldlings, no doubt, will behave Much as usual The Ad man’s Bunny Has its Paw out for your Money; A Hot Cross Bun, and a hollow Chocolate Egg to follow. For Others, the Days, of course Are sacred — to the Horse. In Church, there’s Music soaring And Sermons, piously boring — Oh Sir, never rubbish the Preacher, He’s your Fellow-creature, He may not be one of Your Clerisy, No Gentleman-guru, no Scholar, His Doctrine a Load of old Heresy. A Disgrace to his Cloth and his Collar, His political Leanings seditious, . His Influence (if Any) pernicious, You may yawn while he preaches in Church From his Pulpit, his Perch — Why, compared to your secular Bores Every Day of the Week, in their Scores, He’s a Fountain of Wisdom, and Light. I hear Them all Day and all Night, From the Radio, Press, and Tee-vee, Unloading their Sermons on Me—- — Themselves, it’s Attention they seek. Is there One who one Day in the Week Will preach to the somnolent Pews —- You won’t read his Name in the News — Where the Faithful so faithfully nod, Only seeking Attention to God?.
