Council wants cycle parking

More covered city-centre cycle parking, secure from thieves and bad weather, is being sought by the Christchurch City Council. Cr D. J. Rowlands on Wednesday said the council should ask its property officers to look for areas, such as basements, which might be used for more parking of cycles. The works and traffic committee agreed. Cr Vicki Buck said the council should also urge employers to provide more covered cycle parking in or outside their - buildings. A town-planning ordinance is also being considered that would require developers to provide some off-street cycle parking for staff in the central business district. Most cycle-stands in the city were" commandeered by ; commuters who left their bicycles there all day, said a staff report, leaving little room for shoppers or people coming in for a short time on business. Councillors also said the ' sharing of costs for a proposed short cycleway in Papanui should go into the i

dratt estimates. Although the cycleway would be entirely in Waimairi County, along the railway tracks between Langdons and Vagues Roads, it would be along the city boundary. Service to cyclists was a joint concern of the local bodies, a staff report said. A preliminary construction estimate said the cost could be from $25,000 to $30,000, of which the city would pay about a third. Maintenance would be shared by the city and county. Another joint cycle-lane project, along both sides of Travis Road near Queen Elizabeth II Park, is almost completed. The new sealed strips are already being used by neighbourhood cyclists, and have yet to be marked as cycle lanes. The lanes run between Bassett Street and Frosts Road. In front of the Christchurch Fire Station, between Madras Street and Oxford Terrace, cyclists often cross the footpath or grass. A short, signed cycleway may also soon be built there.
