Nuclear submarine launching
Sir, — I read with interest your account of 3000 protesters at the launching of the nuclear submarine Ohio, (April 9). The item set me wondering how many would realise the significance of Senator Glenn’s remarks: “ the most formidable strate-gic-weapons delivery system ever devised.” This new breed of nuclear submarine is designed to carry 24 Trident II missiles each having a range of 6000 nautical miles and 17 independently targeted warheads — a fire power capable of demolishing 408 cities. The United States plans to complete a fleet of 30 Trident submarines by 1992 and the first 13 are planned for the Pacific. Are we to host these mobile missile bases and so become targets in the event of nuclear war? By the year 2000. according to reliable studies, there will be a 50-50 chance of nuclear war if the arms race is allowed to continue at its present rate. Is this the inheritance that awaits the children of the Pacific? — Yours, etc.. MARTY CAROLL. April 10, 1979. ‘J
