Timber walls

No matter what the style or age of a home, we. all need storage space. In fact, most w-ill admit that storage is a problem. Storage can be easily built-in — and it need not detract from the appearance of a room. A modern design concept is to make the most of such storage by painting doors in bright colours. This is ideal for the children’s bedrooms or rumpus room. For the living room, however, the quiet warmth of natural wood tones has more appeal — it is elegant, friendly and complements any style of blend of furnishings. If you like your furniture as it is and want to avoid competition between it and wall treatment, use timber for your walls, incorporating floor-to-ceiling cabinets in answer to that storage problem. Solid timber panelling may have a rough sawn, milled or shotblasted surface texture. The boards may be wide or narrow and can be installed vertically or horizontally. Choice would have a bearing on the size and design of the room conparnpd.

A small room, for instance, can be made to appear wider and larger if light coloured panelling is installed horizontally. Similarly, low ceilings can be visually lifted by installing vertically placed boards. Timber is completely at home in today’s easy going elegance — whether it be a purely modern setting or a modern-tradi-tional blend.
