Sudan plot thwarted
NZPA Khartoum (Sudan) The Sudanese armed forces have been placed under a state of maximum alert after the discovery of a plot to overthrow the regime of President Jaafar Nemery. The chief of State security (Major-General Omar Mohamed Tayeb) said the plot was planned by “racialists.” He declined to elaborate or give further details apparently for security reasons, when he addressed the Sudanese People’s Assembly. The Sudanese armed forces announced last week that an unspecified number of Sudanese have been arrested on charges of smuggling arms into Sudan with the aim of toppling the Government. The President has survived several coup attempts since coming to power in 1969. He crushed the latest rebellion, led by Mohamed Sadek Mahedi, a , former Prime Minister and I head of the Ansar sect, in 1976. The sect fighters were said to have received [ military and financial aid , from Libya and Ethiopia. 1 Both countries denied the r charge.
