Basketball purse bigger this year
Top American college sides might scoff at the prize money at stake in the 1979 Easter South Island inter-club basketball tournament but it is still an inviting carrot. The prize money has gone up by more than $4OO since last year. The total at stake for the 1979 tournament, which will begin tomorrow, is now $1560. The winner of the men’s A grade will get $3OO, while the top women’s side will receive $250. Winners in the men’s and women’s B grades will each win $125, the same amount at stake for the second-placed men’s and women’s teams in the top grade.
Second place in the B division will be worth $75 for net both the men and women teams. The third and fourth placing in the top level will net both the me and women $5O. The same placing in the men’s and women’s B grade will be worth $4O. For competitors who would rather win cups and trophies, a variety of sponsored prizes will be at stake. Winners of the men’s and women’s A grade will be presented with the Coruba Rum trophy and the runnerup will receive the Dalgety Travel prize. The Dalgety Travel trophy will be won by the top men’s team in the B grade.
