Mauger out
New Zealand’s fivetimes world speedway champion, Ivan Mauger, has been dropped by his Hull team, reports NZPA from London. The Christchurch-born rider’s shock omission from the team is the first time he has been dropped in his long career. His exclusion follows a juggling effort by the Hull promoter, lan Thomas, in a bid to keep his team aggregate below the controversial 50-point average imposed on British speedway earlier this season.
Mauger. aged 39. would take his Vikings side well over the 50-point mark but the New Zealander was shocked at his omission. in spite of warnings at the beginning of the season that all the team's riders would be liable to sit out a race because of the points rule. “It’s the first time since I got into the team that I’ve been left out for anything other than injury or international call,” said Mauger. “It’s a crazy’ move.”
