Motogard still on
It seems likely that the 1979 Motogard Rally will definitely go ahead, albeit in shortened form. If the petrol-selling restrictions are still in force in July — and there seems no reason why not — there cannot be week-end competition in the event because of refuelling difficulties. Thus the rally will probably start on Monday, July 16 and end on Friday, Julv 20.
It has already been announced that the rally has been shortened from 3000 to 2500 km. It is likely that Hannu Mikkola, of Finland, will be top seed for the event, the sixth round of the 12round world championship. Mikkola won the 1973 I-leatway Rally, run in both the North and South Islands, and is currently second in the 1979 world championship behind his Ford teammate, Bjorn Waldegaard. . Ford is well ahead in the manufacturers’ championship, but Fiat is mounting a huge attack on the fourth round, the East African Safari, which starts tomorrow, in a bid to gain some more points. Leading positions after the Monte Carlo, Swedish and Portuguese rallies.— Makes: Ford, 50 points, 1; Fiat, 26, 2; Datsun and Opel, 22, equal 3: Lancia and Saab. 18, equal 5. Drivers: Waldegaard 45, 1; Mikkola, 36, 2; Markku Alen (Finland, Fiat 131), 32, 3; Stig Blomqvist (Sweden) and Bernard Darniche (France, Lancia Stratos), 20, equal 4.
