Cheviot yards open

The new cattle yards and indoor selling complex at Cheviot would be of benefit in some way or another to everyone in the county, said the chairman of directors of the Cheviot A. and P. Cattleyards Society (Mr J. D. Caldwell) at the opening of the new facilities. Mr Caldwell recalled that the yards ahd been built in spite of opposition from the Health Department. He said he considered that sense had prevailed over bureaucracy. But for this opposition the yards would have cost about $4OOO less and there would have been a saving on the part of the taxpayer too. The yards would also have been opened last year instead ctf this year. Several people had made large contributions to the project, Mr Caldwell said. Initial plans had been drawn up by two Cheviot farmers, Mr A. Hyde and Mr A. Cropp, who had also produced the final plan for the yards. The timber for the yards had come from trees donated by the Cheviot Domain Board and the Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association had co-operated greatly and made all the gates used in the yards. Mr Caldwell also praised the work of the builder of the yards, Mr G. Edge, Of Cheviot, and of the indoor selling complex, Peter Hood and Company, who had completed the building on time by working in adverse conditions. Commenting o’n current beef prices, Mr Caldwell said that it had been described as a cattle bonanza, but he refuted this when it was realised that in most countries the price of beef

was almost double the present price in New Zealand.

The new complex was officially declared open by the chairman of the Cheviot County Council, Mr R. G. Anderson. The new facilities worked well in their first trial. About 1200 calves were yarded for the first sale in them, which proved to be a very sound sale with values very firm on the preceding Addington sale and possibly slightly higher than at tile Kaikoura sale. Most of the calves went to destinations outside the district including Kaikoura, Amberley, Christchurch, Waiau, Hanmer and the West Coast. The best of the steer calves made from about $lBO to $207, with average to good at $l6O to $177 and others down to about $l3O. The pick of the heifer calves were bringing from about $l6O to $lB5, with average to good at $145 to $l6O and others ranging down to about $l2O. Sales included. — J. D.
