A. PETIT The Willow Room. Noahs Hotel, Oxford Tee and Worcester St. Phone 791-700. Noahs Hotel describe their Willow Room as the "coffee shop.” but any idea that this means a quick lunch sort of place should be quickly dispelled. It is a sophisticated, very relaxing place to have lunch, and, surprise, surprise, not as expensive as food or furnishings would lead you to believe. The blues and white in which the room is decorated are not at all cold, but set a restful atmosphere, which is enforced by the quiet, friendly, but extremely efficient service. Prices of the main courses of the extensive luncheon menu range from $2 to $4, and are reasonable for the quality of fare provided. We had the Quiche Lorraine, at $2.75. and the home-made veal and ham pie—a special—at $4. The quiche was a lovely fluffy dish of a delightful flavour and just right for lunch. It was served with a salad of assorted cold vegetables tasting of spring rather than autumn. The veal and ham pie was a light mixture of veal loaf into which little chunks of ham were mixed the whole encased in a tasty pastry crust. This dish was garnished with an elaborate salad which went far beyond the all-to-common coleslaw. There were bits of pineapple, peach, mushrooms, asparagus, beetroot, beans, and lettuce, blended with a lemon mayonnaise. We preceded this with a bowl of the soup of the day—a vegetable soup reminiscent of minestrone—always a good start to any meal and calculated to put you in the mood for what is to come. The desserts are all cold dishes, ranging from Pavlova and cheesecake to ice-cream sundae and cheeseboard as an alternative. The desserts are fruit and ice-cream, while you can have the $1.50, the cheese $2.50. If that is not enough you . may have a piece of French gateau at 95c. There is a choice of 11 main courses and a further two specials, including egg dishes, chicken, ham, steak, schnitzel, and a variety of sandwiches —open and toasted. You may choose from seven ways in which to begin your meal. A variety of coffees wrap up the meal, and/or you may have an alcoholic after-dinner drink. Wine may be ordered by the glass or by the bottle, we found the house wine—both red and white —quite drinkable. Lunch for two, including three glasses of wine, came to $12.35.
