Concern over young unemployed
PA Wellington The number of young people facing prolonged unemployment was of particular concern to the National Youth Council, said the council’s deputy president, Ms Annette Dixon, in Wellington. Referring to the unemployment figures released by the Labour Department, and suggestions that the unemployment benefit might be taxed, Ms Dixon said that at present more than 50 per cent of New Zealand’s registered unemployed were under the age of 21.
Most of them received only the reduced youth rate benefit of $37.10 a week, which barely covered the basic necessaries of food, housing, and travel for job interviews, she said.
“At present rates, taxation of the youth benefit could reduce it $5 — a direct cut in the dole and an increase in personal hardship.” Ms Dixon said that the National Youth Council had written to the Minister of Health and Social Welfare (Mr Gair) strongly criticising the moves to tax the unemployment benefit.
