Fatal crash
PA Hamilton A topdressing pilot was killed at Bombay, south of Auckland, yesterday when his aircraft ploughed into a hill and exploded. He was MARK PURNELL ROBERTSON, aged 32, of Thames. The accident happened at 10.30 a.m. about 6km from the scene of a double fatal air crash just over three weeks ago. The
plane, a Fletcher FU24, had just taken off from an airstrip on a farm about 10km from the Bombay crossroads. Onlookers said the plane hit a fence at the end of the strip. The aircraft swung at right angles to the airstrip, skimmed a tree, and crashed into a small gully. One man, Neal Curley, said the plane exploded on impact. “The pilot did not have a chance of getting out,” Mr Curley said.
