Course extended
The Canterbury branch of th* Defensive Driving Council will extend its courses to include motor-cyclists. At the request of the Accident Compensation Commission, the council will introduce the extension to reduce the accident rate of motorcyclists and to create an understanding among other motorists of the limitations and hazards of motor-cycling. The Canterbury area director of the council (Mr J. C. Smith) said the extension would be "a progressive step in the programme for driver improvement.” Two seminars will be held
in Christchurch to discuss methods of course presentation, with instructors from Canterbury and North Canterbury attending. The course would be introduced to other areas throughout New Zealand as their instructors were trained. Mr Smith said that the defensive driving courses had helped reduce the number of accidents in Canterbury. “The courses have an effect not only on those who participate, but also on their families. The numbers of two-car accidents would have been a great deal higher if it was not for the defensive driving programme,” he said.
