1-1 draw for NZ. hockey team
NZPA Brisbane Queensland kept its post-war hockey record intact against visiting New Zealand sides with a one-all draw against the Olympic champions at Finsbury Park, Brisbane, yesterday. In its last four clashes against New Zealand, Queensland has posted two wins and two draws. Yesterday’s match started at. a cracking pace and continued to produce fast open hockey. New Zealand drew first blood just before half-time when Trevor Lawrence crashed home a penalty goal to send the visitors back to the dressing rooms one goal up. However, a change of tactics and the torrid Brisbane heat; took its toll on the visitors in the second half. The newly appointed Queensland coach, Keith Mapp, instructed his players to attack through the left flank combination of lan Milne and Dave Argus.
The tactical move paid hand{some dividends in the ternn I minute of the second naif v, nn I Argus sneaking home the equal iser after a deflection shot trom the fullback, Jim Mason. Queensland, spurred on b> the goal, attacked with great deteim inafion for most of the second halt. However. New Zealand's goalkeeper, Maurice Marqet, was equal to the task, pulling off several spectacular saves, including one from Queensland’s fullback, Wayne Hammond, which would have given the home side victory. After the match New Zealand's coach, Brian Maunsell. praised both teams for their attacking ) spirit. New Zealand will now play matches against New South Wales and Victoria before head ing for Perth to contest the world championships, in which it will meet Great Britain in the first round on April 20.
