Disruption by trucks?
PA Auckland Heavy trucks may make a surprise swoop on a busy highway in New Zealand soon and choke it off to traffic, as a protest against the recent 20 per cent increase in roaduser charges, according to Mr R. J. McSweeney, the chairman of the Road Transport Action Group. Australian truck drivers recently jammed main
roads in protest against increased transport charges there, and militant New Zealand truck drivers might take a leaf from their book, he said. The militant New Zealand "truckies” do not appear to have the same numbers or degree of coordination as their Australian counterparts, but they believe that they could disrupt internal
transport if they decide upon such action. Mr McSweeney said last evening that the subject would be raised at the next meeting of the group. About 140 members recently jammed Queen Street in Auckland. "Quite a few of our members are financially embarrassed now, and others will soon really start to feel the pinch,” he said.
