Single TV support ‘surprises’ P.M.
PA Wellington More people than he had expected supported the idea of one-channel television in New Zealand, said the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon).
He was asked at a news conference how people had reacted to the proposal since he first raised it last month.
“People are preferring the option of a single channel to a substantial increase in licence fees,’’ Mr Muldoon said. “Whether they would if we did it is hard to say, but the mail I get is perhaps weighted that way.” He said that a number of people had written saying, “Yes, get rid of TVI, we like TV2 better.”
That, of course, was impossible, he said. The Cabinet has studied a cost assessment on reducing the present structure to one channel, but had not completed its discussions. Mr Muldoon estimated it would be another two or three weeks before the Government completed its study of changes needed to restore the television profits.
