Meeting’s delay frustrates club

Further frustrations have hindered the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club from securing the stop-class field it sought for its $l5OO New Zealand Cup race at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow evening.
A number of withdrawals was made from the original field after the cancellation of the meeting on March 22. Just when it seemed that more than adequate replacements had been found, more complications arose. Go You Halves, the brilliant Auckland dog which won the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Collar distance race last Friday to add to his Wellington Cup and New Zealand St Leger successes this year, was to have started but the airlines pilots’ strike has forced his owners to change plans.
Mrs Irene Close, partowner and trainer of the dog, said from Auckland that she would like to have sent Go You Halves but the uncertainty surrounding the Strike made it impossible to make definite arrangements.
There is also doubt about the Sydney representative, Fluent Top. He was slightly injured in a trial in Sydney on Sunday and the chance that the dog might be stranded in Christchurch should the strike widen has put his trip in jeopardy. However, the fieldwill still be useful, with Fawn Sleek, the Taranaki representative, travelling by boat and car. The Muldoon dog, fourth in last year’s New Zealand championship, finished second to Go You Halves in the Duke of Edinburgh race and will be a worthy representative from the North Island.
Mystic Wave and Signor Caruso, the winners of the Canterbury regional heats, are proven and experienced chasers on the track. They will relish the long distance and a win by either would not surprise.
Sarkhan Sal and Reefton Rosita, Christchurch replacements in the field, have their share of ability and might share some of the stake money with reasonable runs.
The second leg of the double has drawn a field rich in form and talent. Ariki Sue, a renowned speedster, will have a difficult job over 590 m to lead home three fine chasers from the Sarkhan-Sally Havoc litter: Lisa Havoc, Arithmetic, and Falcon Arrow. Falcon Arrow recently won' the New Zealand Breeders’ Stakes.
