Speedy Girl best?

Special correspondent Auckland Speedy Girl laid strong claims to being the best three-tear-old filly in New Zealand when she held on to win the $13,000 North Island Oaks at Alexandra Park on Saturday. The Gaines Minbar filly, rated well in front by her trainerdriver, John Langdon, lasted gamely to win by a length from the Canterbury visitors, Philippa Frost and Seafield Rose, both of which finished strongly from well back in the field. The win came after Speedy Girl had given Langdon a few anxious moments in the last 100 m. She cut the last 800 m in a torrid 59.55ec so it was not surprising that she was feeling the pressure in the final stages. A recent $30,000 purchase from Southland, Speedy Girl has repaid almost half that amount in winning her onlv three starts to date in the north. She had two outings in Southland before coming north early last month. Langdon bought Speedy Girl on behalf of a semi-retired Te Awamutu fanner, Mr C. E. Blackwell, and her subsequent brilliant form has netted the combination $14,235.

She will get a further chance to increase that tally when she tackles the $13,000 New Zealand Oaks at Addington on Anzac Day.
