Second channel
Sir, — Before, the Minister thinks of raising the licence fee he should have a look at the staffing strengths. One extravagance obvious to every viewer is the provision of four competent adults, plus any number of “in the field” reporters, to give 30 minutes of news, weather reports and programme previews. One news reader should suffice for this period. I da not think that
there was any great public demand for the second channel as most viewers were aware that there were insufficient good programmes available to fill out one channel and that with two in operation the best items would be competing. The simple answer to our financial difficulties is to scrap Channel Two before length of service periods make redundancy payments prohibitive. A captive audience would .also provide grounds for increased advertising rates. — Yours, etc., A. K. HAMILTON, Loburn. April 7, 1979.
