Former Premier seeks workers’ compensation
(NZPA Sydney ‘ The former Premier of South Australia, Don Dunstan, has taken out a workers’ compensation action against the state of South Australia for damage to his health suffered while he was in office, the “Australian Financial Review” newspaper has reported. The “Review” said papers were presently being prepared setting out the details of the claim. It is believed that Mr Dunstan is seeking sAust2s,ooo in compensation, but Government sources would not confirm the amount.
Mr Dunstan retired as Premier in February because of ill health. Last Monday he left for Italy where he will spend several months learning Italian.
On retiring Mr Dunstan received about sAustl9l,ooo in superannuation and he is entitled to a Parliamentary pension of sAustls,69l a year.
The legal status of Mr Dunstan’s claim will cause some arguments among lawyers, the “Financial Review” said.
According to legal sources, it is unclear whether Parliamentarians are covered by workers’ compensation legislation. However Mr Dunstan, who is a Queen’s Counsel and a former Attorney-General of South Australia, was un< likely to have submitted a claim unless he was confident it could succeed, the newspaper said.
Mr Dunstan has been out of hospital since late Feb< ruary but is reported to b« still in ill health.
