Prison report sought
PA Wellington The Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) has called for a report on Arthur Allan Thomas’s allegations that he is being victimised at Hautu Prison, Justice Department officials at the Central North Island minimum security prison farm and at head office in Wellington would not comment yesterday on the Thomas allegations.
Arthur Allan Thomas was convicted in 1970 of the murders of Jeannette and Harvey Crewe. Since then there has been widespread controversy that he was wrongly imprisoned.
He is now in Hautu Prison pending parole, but in a letter smuggled out from the prison he alleges he has been denied privileges extended to other prisoners and that the department is trying to break his spirit. Yesterday, the department would say nothing on his claims but Mr McLay’s secretary said that a report on the matter would be called for from the Secretary for Justice.
After the morning session of the Cabinet, Mr McLay said: “Naturally I will look into what has been reported in the paper.” But he said he could not comment any further. “I cannot make off-the-cuff comments about people who are in prison. When I have the facts before me I will decide whether to make anv further comment.”
