Busmen’s dispute settled
PA Whangarei Whangarei’s bus drivers’ I dispute, which halted buses j[ in the city for three days.; was settled late yesterday. Union and management representatives reached a compromise solution and the• drivers agreed to go back to, work at 8 a.m. today. Al! 20 drivers of the Northern Motor Bus Company held a 24-hour strike from mid-, night last Thursday in protest at the non-settlement! of a shift claim. They were sacked by the[ company at noon on Friday [ in what the company claimed; a breach of the Industrial Relations Act. An Auckland organiser of the Northern Drivers’ Union, Mr Ernie Delaney, represented the drivers at a meeting with company and Whangarei City Council representatives yesterday morning, but the meeting ended in deadlock with union officials threaten- ■ ing to call out all drivers in Northland. At a subsequent meeting which ended about 7 p.m.. an ; agreement was reached withl three drivers, who were rost- j ered for work on Saturday. • to be paid for eight hours of | lost time. The balance of the drivers j agreed to forfeit two days; pay after the dismissal notices were withdrawn.
