Green light for S.A. rugby tour
NZPA-Reuter Auch, France The French sports minister, Jean-Pierre Soisson, has given the green light to a tour of France by what he called a multi-racial team representing South Africa, later this year. “The Government cannot oppose the visit to France of what would be a multi-racial South African side. Of course, I hope that the composition of the team allows blacks and whites to play in the same game,” said Mr Soisson. Anti-apartheid and anti-
racist groups had joined left-wing political parties in appealing to the government to ban the tour due for October. They argued that the South Africans intended only a token black presence in the squad. The organisations have threatened to disrupt the tour if it is allowed to take place.
Mr Soisson made no direct mention of a predominantly white touring side from Transvaal due to arrive in France tomorrow, for a fourmatch tour.
