Olympic Cup for rowing organisers
PA Auckland | In a remarkable tribute, the organising committee of the world rowing championships, held at Lake Karapiro | last November, has been awarded the Olympic Cup for efficient and meritorious service to sport. The award, which was announced to the chairman of the committee, Mr D. D. Rowlands, has been made by the International Olympic Committee. The recommendation was made by the president of the International Rowing Federation, Mr Thomi Keller, of Switzerland, who in his citation praised the committee for its outstanding conduct of the championships — the first to be staged for the federation south of the Equator. _

' The distinction was given to ; the committee of the 1950 Empire Games, in Auckland i — a festival of critical 1 importance to the future of 1 the Games. The cup Js awarded to 1 individuals or organisations i with a general reputation for 1 merit and integrity which : have been active and efficient in the service of sport, and 1 which have contributed sub- 1 stantially to the development ' of the Olympic movement. “Naturally, I am very ' proud of the committees
which has won this fine award,” said Mr Rowlands. “Mr Keller’s cabled congratulations are the cream on the coffee. We have had a great team which is still working as enthusiastically; and harmoniously as when we started off nearly three years ago.” The members of the committee have been Mr Rowlands, Miss Lesley Keyes (women’s rowing), Miss Janey Stanaway (accommodation), Mr K. A. Ashby (deputy chairman), Mr C. H. Hilliard (hon. secretary), and Messrs T. C. Flood, A. Popplewell, D. G. Boswell, J. Claughton, M. C. Weston, J. C. Williamson. W. S. Wrathall, P. A. Baddeley, D.
