One jet to leave Chch
All but one Air New Zealand domestic flights have been cancelled until noon today. The only domestic flight not affected is the daily DCIO from Christchurch to Auckland and return. An Air New Zealand spokesman said that 1400 people at Christchurch were affected by the strike yesterday when 25 flights had to be cancelled, and about 1700 people would be affected by cancelled flights today. “The public will be notified of any , change as soon as possible,” the spokesman said. The Canterbury Aero Club was “flat out all day” yesterday with chartered flights because of the strike, according to a club spokesman. The club provided nine flights yesterday “and that
is about all we can handle,” the spokesman said. Club members have a priority when booking aircraft and only five aircraft were available for the whole day yesterday. One more was available in the afternoon, and six aircraft may be available for charter today.
“There will always be someone who wants to get somewhere in a hurry, so we will probably keep going flat out for as long as the strike lasts,” the spokesman said.
Mount Cook Airlines included an extra flight to Auckland from Christchurch yesterday. “However, our capacity to provide extra services is limited,” said the airline’s general manager (Mr M. L. Corner).
