Solo mothers
Sir, — The Social Welfare Department would do better if it offered solo mothers sound advice instead of punishing them. These girls and their illegitimates still have to have a roof and food. An effective means of halting these de facto relationships while the girls receive solo
mother benefits would be to pressure the “lover boys” through the courts to refund what the Social Welfare Department demands. The department’s reasoning would probably be that the girls can have as many de factos as they like but not at its expense. We, the taxpayers, must take into account that these girls in general prefer to live alone with their babies, to getting in the “red” with the Social Welfare Department; but an aggressive, over-sexed, underworked male takes., a lot of convincing, particularly as he has nothing to lose if his girl is caught up with by the Social Welfare Department. —Yours, etc., SELWYN R. CAMPBELL. Dunsandel. March 28, 1979.
