Good attendances at Oxford show
I The threat of bad weather I dampening the seventieth Oxford iAgricultural and Pastoral Show ■ on Saturday did not amount to I more than a few drops of rain, i The show’s committee reported i good attendances and high quality in the competitions. Fonnallv opening the show, the i member of Parliament for Rangiora (Mr D. F. Quigley) said 'that the high gate takings were a tribute to the efforts of the president and his committee. j Takings of $1813.50 were $152 up on last year. ! “People living in urban areas [would benefit by coming to [shows like the Oxford Show, to ! see how people in rural areas could work together as a team to produce such a successful event/’ said Mr Quigley. The president of the show (Mr K. B. Judson), said that he was very pleased with the way this year's show had turned out He said that it was evident that people had made a con* certed effort to make the day successful and it was like “one big happy family reunion” for a lot of people. Mr Judson said that for the first time in many years the[ show had its own flag flying. He said that the red and white iflag had gone astray several years ago New attractions included highland dancing and a vintage car display. Shearing, woodchopping, and weaving displays returned to the show after being absent for the last few years. There was a lot of interest in the shearing competitions with the new three-stand woolshed being used for the first time. Local shearers did well, winning the open and senior sections. Entries in this event were slightly down on past figures but of a high quality, according to the shearing competition’s administrator, Mr J. Williams, of Lyttelton. He said that petrol restrictions
r| could have deterred people from] licoming from further afield. Mr E. A. Adams, who judged J [the Friesians in the cattle sec- . |tion said that entries were very 11 strong, both in numbers and in -quality. “Several of the cattle would - hold their own in any part of J New Zealand,” he said. 3 Miss M. Murray, who judged 2 the black sheep, said that she would like to see people getting ? stock from studmasters. She said 1 that the ram lambs were not up 5 to scratch to breed from. There 3 was a good consistent standard j though with the ewe lambs, she s said. j In the mixed types of this seci tion there was a great varietyin the quality, she said. L - Reasonably good support and 5 standard was obtained in all s pony classes, said Mrs D. E. Killey. judge of this section. L Apart from one accident in . which a man was kicked in the leg by a horse, requiring j stitches, the St John Ambulance '. Brigade reoorted a quiet day. The local police constable re- . ported no problems, everything J running smoothly. Results: HORSES Horse championships were:— Hack: J. M. Lambs Havn; re- • serve champion, Mrs R.
