’Fine’ changed to claim

PA Auckland The industrial “fine” imposed on a trucking company by the Northern Drivers' Union has been abandoned and a written claim for an “ex-gratia payment” lodged instead. The $2OOO claim was made against a South Auckland trucking company, Andres and Andrew, Ltd, for what the union alleged to be negligence in its safety procedures. The money is intended to go to a van driver whose legs were disfigured by nitric acid burns. The company has received a written claim for the Northern' Drivers’ Union official handling the case, Mr E. M. Delaney, for an ex-gratia payment of $2OOO. A company spokesman said the letter was being considered. “We have not paid the industrial fine, and we do not intend to pay,” the spokesman said. A meeting of the company’s South Auckland drivers, and possibly its drivers in the Hamilton branch, will be held to consider progress on the claim.
