Petrol control measures may be adjusted

PA Wellington The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) has agreed to consider proposals from the Motor Trade Association for alternative pet-rol-restraint measures. He would not say what the proposals were, but indicated that relaxing Saturday petrol-sales restrictions was discussed at a meeting with association representatives. Mr Birch said the proposals would be studied by the demand restraint committee in a matter of days. However, he said that the public should not raise their hopes of restrictions being relaxed. "We want to maintain i the present level of savings,” he said. “Anything we do with the association will be a balancing arrangement just to spread j the burden.” Mr Birch said the delegation, led by the national president of the association (Mr P. Milne) was I concerned that week-end sales restrictions had an j uneven effect on garages. “There may be some way in which adjustments 1 can be made to allow garages to open on Saturday mornings, which is what they want.” In reply to a question,

In comparison, some city service stations had profited because of heavysales on Thursdays and Fridays and the fact that they did not have to pay staff week-end penal rates.
