Modern works for the piano
By
C. FOSTER BROWNE
John Luxton. the pianist at the University of Canterburv’s School of Music, on Thursday played a programme of works by Berio, , Pousseur, Haubenstock Ramati, and Dallapiccola These compositions all seemed to follow the same scheme — take any cluster of notes, preferably close to one another, and let them follow their leader melodicallv, accompanied with derived chords; let them flow quietly for a while and then strike a chord, the more dissonant the better, with brutal strength. Repeat this scheme until life has fled. Devious inversions are possible and they all soutd the same. Mr Luxton played excellently and was well in control of this type of music, as he is in other styles. His playing had a summoning quality, and he had a wealth of tonal colouring on which to draw. Choice of tempo and timing within a work were exact, and he always prepared a special effect with good judgment. He had a particularly pleasing “singing” tone, and shaped a phrase with nice judgment.
