Mulder thrown out of party
NZPA-Reuter Pretoria Connie Mulder, once frontrunner for the Prime Ministership of South Africa, has been expelled from the ruling National Party over his role in the “slush funds” scandal now rocking the Government. He had already resigned from the Cabinet, from his Parliamentary seat, and from his party leadership in the Transvaal province. His successor as Transvaal leader, Andries Treurnicht. said Dr Mulder had refused an ultimatum either to accept the two interim reports of a judicial inquiry into the scandal or to leave the party. Since the inquiry has rejected Dr Mulder’s
evidence this amounted to a direction to him to recant and accept full blame for the scandal. Dr Truernicht said Dr Mulder telephoned a party executive and said he could not accept the reports of the commission, headed by Judge Rudolf Erasmus. Accordingly, Dr Mulder’s party membership had been terminated, Dr Truernicht said.
The Erasmus Commission lambasted Dr Mulder for his handling of the now-dis-banded Information Department, which was accused of spending millions of dollars of secret government funds on propaganda exercises, including the founding of a mass circulation newspaper.
