‘Foreign agents’ blew up N-gear

NZPA-Reuter La Seyne-sur-Mer (France) The Mayor of La Seyne-sur-Mer has said that foreign agents were behind bomb explosions on Friday which destroyed equipment for a nuclear power reactor in Iraq. Mayor Paul Blanc, who used to work in the naval and industrial shipyard in La Seyne-sur-Mer, where the explosion took place, said his conviction was based on first-hand information from former colleagues. The Mayor is a Communist with close links with the Communist-led union, the Confederation General du Travaile, the largest force in the shipyard. He said that seven bombs had wrecked the dome-shaped shell, designed to protect the core of a reactor destined for Iraq. The explosions also damaged two experimental reactors due to be shipped io an unknown Middle Eastern country and equipment for nuclear installations in Belgium and West Germany. None of the equipment contained radioactive material. Several ecological groups claimed responsibility for the attack, but Mr Blanc said he was sure they were fake. A police source said their claims were not being taken seriously.
