Suspicious fire

PA Taupo Explosions amid flames which leapt more than 30m awakened many Taupo residents early yesterday, when a spectacular fire destroyed the town’s only cabaret. No-one was hurt in the fire which the police are treating as arson. Only the badly charred and gutted shell of the Chequers cabaret building remains.

The fire could be seen for many kilometres, but 25 firemen were able to bring it under control in just 20 minutes. Noise caused by exploding fibrolite alerted many local residents. Four fire engines attended, including one from Turangi. The cabaret is a few metres from the shores of Lake Taupo, only about 200 m from the fire station.
