Cathedral recital
By
C. FOSTER BROWNE
Ruth Hawkey, with John Luxton as accompanist, sang songs by Schubert, Delius, and Faure in Christchurch Cathedral. Ruth Hawkey’s voice and her sensitive interpretations suited these delightful songs splendidly. For the most part her programme consisted of gems from the works of their composers and hence were well known. They and their polished rendering made the recital well worth while and a joy to hear. Special mention must be made of Mr Luxton’s excellent playing of the accompaniments. From the small hut good piano he brought forth rippling and gentle
| sounds, joyful sounds, dark (colours of impending traIgedy, bright and shimmering j colours when sunlight I flooded the scene, and wispy shifts of mist at early dawning. The two artists showed j close rapport in response to the poetic subtleties of the poems and gave us an hour in the middle of the day when we could think oh these things. Ruth Hawkey has a soprano voice of controlled and beautiful tone with manyshades of colouring all adapted to the meaning of a phrase with artistic skill. Her interpretations come brightly to life and are always governed by stylish i subtleties.
