The Mount already clear soccer leader
An all-too-familiar pattern is already emerging after only two full rounds of the 1979 Rothmans Soccer League competition. Mount Wellington has shot three points clear of the rest of the field and, as was the case last year, looks likely to lead the other 11 teams for at least the first few rounds of play. Yesterday, after being held to a scoreless first half by Manawatu United, the Mount surged away to score four times, giving it a good goal difference of eight for and only one against. A group of five teams are bunched on three points, including three northern teams. Hanimex United, Blockhouse Bay and Courier Rangers. Hanimex had a good win over Wellington Diamond United in Auckland while Blockhouse, trailing 2-0 at half-time, was a little unlucky not to have taken two points from Tans Tours United at Queen Elizabeth II Park.
Courier Rangers were well beaten by Stop Out at Lower Hutt, the home side scoring al! five goals. Eastern Suburbs received a further setback .when it was beaten by Newmans Nelson United in Auckland.
Manurewa took its first league point in its third match, drawing 1-1 with Dunedin City in Auckland, its 22-year-old centre-half, Lee Stickland, scoring his team’s goal. Unlike its last appearance in the league in 1977, when it had a disastrous start to the season. Dunedin City has taken three points out of a possible four. Results: Manawatu United 0. Mount Wellington 4 (Keith Nelson 2, Clive Campbell, own goal). Halftime, 0-0. Eastern Suburbs 0. Newmans Nelson United 1 (Ricky Herbert). Half-time, 0-1. Trans Tours United 2 (Richard Mulligan. Johann Verweij), Blockhouse Bay 2 (Mike Farac penalty, Adrian Kersten). Half-time, 2-0. Manurewa 1 (Lee Stickland), Dunedin City 1 (Steve Wooddin). Halftime, 1-0. Hanimex United 2 (Keith Hobbs, Dave Twyneham), W.D.U. 0. Half-time, 1-0. Stop Out 4 (Derek GibsonSmith, Sergio Ritossa, Shane Rufert, Courier Rangers 1 (Ken Dugdale own goal). Half-time, 2-1.
