Values Party leader to face challenge
■ PA Auckland, The Values Party deputy i (leader, Mrs Margaret CroI’zier, will challenge tbe party 1 leader, Mr A. H. Kunowski, 1 for the leadership when the annual conference is held : i next month. i ■ Mrs Crozier was reluctant (to discuss her move when 1 (approached at the week-end i I but party sources say her (nomination will be sent to /Wellington in the next few ' days. ' The Values Party has been ; in some disarray since the ‘ General Election in November, when its share of the vote fell to 2.5 per cent. t Mr Kunowski has made r several statements threatening to resign unless the 1 party shook off its anti-lead- j ership complex and allowed v him to exercise more lead-i ership.
The party is also torn over whether it should have a centralised, professional leadership or concentrate on being a loose federation of local groups. There are also strong fears among some members about the extreme Left-wing stance the party has taken on aspects of land and industrial ownership. Mrs Crozier, who has been deputy leader since 1976, said she had been approached by many members asking her not to stand down or withdraw. She said the difference between herself and Mr Kunowksi was one of style. “I think people see me as being the person who has provided the most leadership within the party” she said.
