Weld-free system
PA Wellington An American firm plans to start making structural steel buildings in New Zealand that need no boilermakers to weld the joints. While the space frame system, promoted by the Unistrut Corporation, is not designed to cope with mult i-storey buildings such as the Bank of New Zealand building in Wellington, it still attracted attention when introduced to engineers and architects recently. The system is used for long-span roofing frames, but company representatives showed some examples of buildings that use it as a frame. Mr C. Patterson, the manager of the New Zealand subsidiary, said his firm planned to make 80 per cent of the components.
