Remand for amputee

Nelson reporter A one-legged member of the Lost Breed motor-cycle gang, Peter Neven Mac Ewan, aged 23, a sickness beneficiary, was remanded in custody to April 10 in the Magistrate’s Court at Nelson yesterday on a charge of assaulting a traffic officer, David John Thompson, on April 5 with intent to injure. Mr J. R. F. Fardell, for Mac Ewan, sought bail, saying that the defendant had to attend hospital daily for physiotherapy. The defendant vehemently denied the charge against him, saying that the traffic officer concerned was something of a trespasser, and his defence would be based on those lines, said Mr Fardell. Mr R. T. Blair, J.P. remanded the defendant in custody on the assault charge and on three driving charges: failing to wear a helmet, exceeding the speed limit, and failing to stop when indicated.
