Surprise Cabinet
The Spanish Prime Minis-1 ter (Mr Adolfo Suarez) has ended five weeks of uncertainty by naming a new enlarged Cabinet including the surprise appointment of a lieutenant-general as Interior Minister to direct the fight against guerrilla violence. Mr Suarez, confirmed as Prime Minister for a third term after his victory in a General Election on March 1, introduced 10 new faces in the 24-man Government. Lieutenant-General Antonio Ibanez Freire, a 66-year-old former director of the paramilitary Civil Guard and a close confidant of Mr Suarez, the new Interior Minister, will take on the tough task of trying to stamp out guerrilla violence which has killed 33 people this year and caused open dissent in the police and parts of the conservative armed forces. —Madrid. Waugh stands The celebrated newspaper columnist and author, Auberon Waugh, has said he will stand against Jeremy Thorpe in the North Devon constituency in the British General Election on May 3. Waugh, son of the novelist, Evelyn Waugh, will stand for the Liberal Dog-Lovers’ Party. Waugh, who is 39, said his election manifesto would include “obvious things like doggy toilets in public places, and doggy health visitors and social workers.” —London Fierce fighting Fierce fighting has been reported at the Kampuchean border town of Poipet between forces loyal to the ousted Kampuchean Prime [Minister. Pol Pot, and Viet-namese-supported troops of President Heng SamrinJ Police officials at the Thai side of the border reported .hearing heavy artillery fire[ just inside Kampuchea at 7 a.m. and said that Pol Pot forces have possibly seized parts of the strategic border itown of Poipet. — Bangkok.
